The Pittsburgh Pirates made a significant offer for Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton just before the trade deadline passed on Wednesday.
According to a source, Pittsburgh offered a collection of elite prospects in addition to Jeff Locke, a left-handed starting pitcher who is 9-3 with a 2.36 ERA this season. The batch of prospects included Jameson Taillon (Double A Pitcher), Gregory Polanco (Double A Outfielder), and Nick Kingham (Double A Pitcher).
Tailon and Polanco are widely regarded as the top two prospects in the Pirates system. ESPN ranked them as the 13th and 17th best prospects in baseball, respectively. The Marlins declined.
Stanton’s tenure with the fish lives on.
