Five Questions with Miami Dolphins Defensive End Oliver Vernon
Josh Baumgard: First off, will the Canes pull it out against the Gators in week two?
Olivier Vernon: I think so. Get some Gator meat.
What’s something you want to get better at individually between now and the start of the season?
OV: Recognizing more of the offense. There’s so much you can learn. So many different offenses out here. I just try to take it one game at a time and soak in everything Coach Rodgers tries to teach us.
Has Cameron Wake been a big influence? Have you ever seen someone with so much power and explosion off the line?
OV: Oh yeah. Everyday. I see him practice and what I see him do on a consistent basis, I just try to match him in practice. I try to do the same things as him, to match his intensity and his work ethic. The thing about him is he gets such great leverage. He’s not that heavy, but he doesn’t look like that when he’s on film. He’s knocking guys back left and right so I just try to see what he does.
Are you trying to learn his four-point stance? It’s pretty different.
OV: That is different, but that’s his thing, man. I try to match him, but in my own way.
How much easier is it knowing you have Wake on the other side attracting so much attention?
OV: Hopefully I get some freebies because of the double teams. He’s a great pass rusher, and pretty much everyone on the line is a good pass rusher. So whenever we get one-on-ones, our coaches expect us to beat our opponent.
