With Free Agency officially here, we’re taking a look at a handful of plausible options for the Heat. Armed with just the mini-midlevel exception priced at about $3.2 million annually and the veteran’s minimum, Miami’s options are limited.
Potential Target: Lamar Odom
Experience: 14 Years
Fit: Lamar fits Miami’s position-less roster because of his versatility. He can play three positions and contribute in a variety of ways. He’s a pretty good passer, ball-handler and rebounder, while his shooting continued to plummet (39% FG, 20% 3FG, 47% FT) to new lows last season. His defense is a plus (when he’s in shape), because of his ability to guard multiple positions. Could his offensive game be revived alongside Miami’s dynamic superstars? Would “famous” wife Khloe Kardashian be happy in Miami?
Likelihood: Odom would have to come for the veteran minimum regardless of the other moves Miami makes, and whether that’s even an option is unknown at this point. With limited roster spots, Miami should also be seeking to get a little younger on the bench, hoping to develop some wing players as Ray Allen, Shane Battier, and Mike Miller age into retirement. Lamar returning to Miami would be fun nonetheless, reuniting with Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem for the chance to win his third NBA Championship.
