One of the greatest comedies of all time, White Men Can’t Jump, was on the tube this week and it got me thinking. What are the best basketball movies of all time? This is my list, what’s yours?
Honorable Mention: Above the Rim, The Air Up There, Coach Carter, Glory Road, Love & Basketball, Eddie, Juwanna Man
1. White Men Can’t Jump (1992)
”Billy, listen to me. White men can’t jump.”
Rotten Tomatoes Score – 77%
This tops the list because of its tremendous replayability. It doesn’t matter that I’ve seen it 42 times, when White Men Can’t Jump is on TV, I’m watching. One of my other favorite quotes: “You can put a cat in an oven, but that don’t make it a biscuit.”
2. Hoosiers (1986)
“My practices aren’t designed for your enjoyment.”
Rotten Tomatoes Score – 88%
A true classic. Enough said.
3. He Got Game (1998)
“I want you to meet the assistant coaches.”
Rotten Tomatoes Score – 80%
Ray Allen hit the big screen with Denzel Washington in Spike Lee’s flick featuring basketball, boobs, a fun story, and decent acting. Watching this illegally on pay-per-view at age 11 is one of the fondest memories of my childhood. If you haven’t had the pleasure, watch the movie in full on Youtube right here.
4. Blue Chips (1994)
“You cannot win half-assed!”
Rotten Tomatoes Score – 23%
23 percent? You kiddin’ me! Blue Chips is so fun to watch. It’s like peeling the curtain back on USC football, and seeing how real recruiting goes down.
5. Space Jam (1996)
”Larry’s not white. Larry’s clear.”
Rotten Tomatoes Score – 35%
Don’t knock it because it’s a cartoon or because it got a 35 on RT, Space Jam is in the sports movie hall of fame.
