Our Top 5 Series continues every Thursday
Who are the five greatest University of Miami quarterbacks of all time? This was an incredibly tough list to compile.
Current quarterback Stephen Morris has a chance to get up there with an epic senior season this fall. But let’s take a trip back to the good ole days at Quarterback U.
(*Note: Only collegiate years are considered. What they accomplished in the pro’s does not apply.)
5. Steve Walsh (1986-1988)
Doesn’t get the same pub as the others, but his 23-1 record speaks for itself.
He also led the Canes to the 1987 National Championship as a sophomore. Would undoubtedly be higher if he returned for another season.
4. Vinny Testaverde (1982-1986)
Probably the best pro of the bunch with 21 years of experience. His brain must look like oatmeal by now.
The 1986 Heisman winner balled in college as well, tossing 48 touchdowns his last two seasons en route to the top overal pick in the 1987 NFL Draft. His final game is the stinger, however, when he threw five interceptions in the 1987 National Championship as Miami fell to Penn State 14-10.
3. Bernie Kosar (1983-1984)
Took home the school’s first national title in 1983 after upsetting top-ranked Nebraska. In his final collegiate game, he threw for 294 yards and two touchdowns as Miami topped UCLA in the 1985 Fiesta Bowl.
2. Gino Toretta (1989-1992)
For those young enough to only have experienced Gino Toretta, the radio personality, I feel for you. But this guy could sling it for the orange and green.
He won the Heisman Trophy in 1992 and held the school record for passing yards in a game with 485 before Morris broke it last year.
1. Ken Dorsey (1999-2002)
National Championship winner. Two-time Heisman Trophy finalist. 38-2 record as starter.
Ken Dorsey is what every college quarterback aspires to be. A champion in every sense, he should have nailed his second National Championship in 2002, but we know how that one played out. Dorsey proved you’d much rather have a quarterback with a brain over a cannon arm.
Should top this list for a very long time.
